Move to halve Tasman check-in time
Air New Zealand has unveiled a new kiosk checkin experience for passengers flying to Australia, aimed to halve the time it takes to check-in. In a first for passengers departing from New Zealand, people travelling to Australia from Auckland International Airport are now able to check themselves in. There are 18 new self-service kiosks in the economy check-in area, and six new kiosks in the premium checkin area. The process is similar to that introduced at the carrier’s main domestic terminals from 2008. Trans-Tasman passengers simply scan their machine readable passports at a kiosk to be issued with a boarding pass, and bag tags if they are checking in bags. They then take their bags to the ‘bag drop’ area, where Air New Zealand staff scan the bag and check the passenger’s ID. “We set ourselves the challenge to transform our customers’ experience of the airport, so they have a seamless experience from checking-in through to walking off the plane at their destination,” says Air New Zealand group general manager international airline Ed Sims. “Currently passengers must check-in at least 90 minutes
prior to their Australian flights, but if the new process succeeds in reducing check-in time as expected, then Air New Zealand will look to reduce the 90 minute deadline.” Air New Zealand passengers able to use the new checkin process are those travelling to an Australian destination with:
• a New Zealand or Australian passport;
• any passport with a machine readable zone, or
• any passenger on another passport type holding a valid
electronic travel authority (ETA).
The airline will be progressively introducing new kiosks at its Wellington, Queenstown and Christchurch international check-in areas over the next nine months.

Pacific Resort Rarotonga’s EarthCheck benchmark
Pacific Resort Rarotonga’s commitment to environmental practices has been recognised by the EarthCheck sustainable travel and tourism certification organisation.
The resort says the EarthCheck Program is widely regarded as the world’s most scientifically rigorous. It measures key environmental indicators such as energy and water consumption, and total waste production as well as community commitment. Using the EarthCheck tool, Pacific Resort Rarotonga committed to benchmarking local environmental and social issues; such as biodiversity conservation, environmental investment and enhanced community socio-economic benefits. This involves submitting a year’s worth of operational data, and having it compared to that of other communities of a similar kind. They achieved Bronze Benchmarked status. By taking such a holistic view of sustainability practices, Pacific Resort Rarotonga was able to identify where they were out-performing others, and where room for improvement remained.

A “Mass” (“measure”) of beer, will cost between €8.30 and €8.90 at the event in Munich 18SEP-04OCT. Walter Peak guided cycling operation – spring launch
Real Journeys is gearing up for the spring launch of its new Walter Peak Guided Cycling excursion. For the first time, cyclists will have the chance to explore the spectacular tussock clad backcountry between Walter Peak High Country Farm and the Mavora Lakes - with an experienced guide. The personalised cycle tour is designed to cater for different riding abilities. Moderate fitness is required and group members have the option of cycling between 15 and 35kms of the Back Road as it meanders through beech forest and gently rolling terrain. A van and cycle trailer escorting the group means cyclists can choose how much of the route they want to bike with the option of hopping into the van at various points along the way. There is also a non-cycling option for anyone keen to explore the remote back country location and enjoy the day out. After being fitted with top quality bikes and helmets, the day begins with a cruise transfer on board TSS Earnslaw to Walter Peak High Country Farm. The cyclists are then transported to Mavora Lakes where the cycling adventure commences. Throughout the day refreshments are provided. Stops are made at a traditional musterer’s hut for a picnic lunch and at the heritage stone building Old Nic for afternoon tea. On returning to Walter Peak, cyclists visit the historic Colonel’s Homestead and gardens (if there is time) before the return trip across the lake to Queenstown, arriving at 5.30pm. To accommodate the extra visitors to the area, three new toilets are being installed along the route. This small group guided cycling tour, in partnership with Around The Mountain Cycle Tours Ltd., will depart 01NOV- 15APR. A separate option is also being introduced which will enable cyclists to transport their own or hired bikes on the TSS Earnslaw and to explore the back country route independently. Cyclists will be supplied with a map outlining distances and times and a snack voucher to be redeemed on board the TSS Earnslaw or at Walter Peak. The option allows flexibility and the chance to return to Queenstown on a later TSS Earnslaw crossing.
Ryanair to charge up to £80 per bag
Ryanair is increasing the cost of checked baggage to as much as £80 per bag during the summer holiday season. The charge for a first bag that is checked into the hold via Ryanair’s website will rise from £15 to £20 in July and August, while the figure for the second bag goes up from £35 to £40. But a customer who forgets to check-in online will be charged £40 for the first bag and £80 for a second bag at the airport in the July / August peak. The same charges will apply if the flight has been booked through a call centre. At present the charges are £35 for a first bag and £70 for a second bag. To make matters tougher, Ryanair has a 15kg weight limit on each checked bag, a limit lower than other carriers and one it claims is to incentivise passengers to travel light.

More daylight for Britain?
MPs at Westminster, led by Torbay’s Adrian Sanders, have called for a three-year trial of Single/Double Summer Time, which would mean clocks were moved forward from GMT by one hour in winter and by two hours in the summer months. Britain’s new coalition Government has spelt out its commitment to studying the move and the idea has backing from tourism chiefs and the visitor industry. But Tourism Minister John Penrose also said any concerns north of the border in Scotland would also have to be taken into account. Tourist chiefs say moving the clocks forward throughout the year would bring huge financial benefits because the extra hour’s light in the evening would give more time for leisure pursuits and lengthen the tourist season.

Plan Ahead!
A client speaks - I recently met a group travelling independently through the Middle East while I was on tour with Kumuka. Interested in how difficult it is to travel solo in such a location, I got chatting to them. I was astounded to discover that they had spent more than double the time planning the trip than actually doing it. They said the planning was still underway when they left! I asked if they felt as if it was accurate, they said, "If I we had more time we could have been more prepared". They said "There is only so much you can learn by reading, you really find out what works and what doesn't when you actually get there, we have found we missed so much due to lack of preparation".
For them, the many the endless days and nights of preparation and just hacking their way through a destination is enjoyment enough? Taking a tour with all the highlights included, exclusives that only an organised group can get into, and the safety and comfort of a -decent- nights safe sleep are WELL WORTH IT!

Futuristic double-decker unveiled

Passengers have been promised a ‘greener, light and airy’ service when the new buses start running in London in 2012. The 87-pax buses will feature two staircases, two doors and an open platform allowing passengers to hop on and off. But when the back of the bus is open - during rush hour and other busy

World’s Greatest Train Journey
The 164-mile scenic rail journey from Glasgow to Oban, Fort William and Mallaig on the West Highland Line has been judged the World’s Greatest Rail Journey two years running by Wanderlust magazine’s readers. Fort William is the largest town on the West Highland Line, and the station is only 10 minutes walk from the bottom of the tourist track up Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain. The rail line extends north to the fishing port and ferry terminal of Mallaig, and many people regard this as the nicest section of the route. Mallaig is the ferry terminal for the Isle of Skye and several Scottish islands. Four trains a day link Ft William and Mallaig in each direction (one on Sundays), taking about 90 minutes. According to the seat61.com website, travellers can take a daily steam train between Ft William and Mallaig during the summer months. Travel is in British Railways 1950s ‘Mark 1’ carriages, with opening door droplights and window ventilators that make photography easier than through modern trains’ sealed windows. The trains may be hauled by one of several possible vintage steam locomotives. Scotland also has its very own cruise train, the luxurious and exclusive Royal Scotsman. Several times each month from MAY to OCT it offers three-night excursions from Edinburgh up the West Highland Line and back with meals, wine, whisky, afternoon tea and excursions all included.

Go Kiwi!
Air New Zealand was voted the top airline in the March 2010 Roy Morgan International Airline Satisfaction Survey, while Qantas ranked seventh.
Just over 14,000 Australians were asked to rate 24 international airlines in terms of customer service. The Australian reports that almost 90% of Australians who took a flight with Air New Zealand in the last 12 months were ‘very’ or ‘fairly’ satisfied, according to the poll. Singapore Airlines came in second with 88.4%, followed by Emirates with 87.9%. Only 80.1% of Qantas customers on international flights were satisfied. Qantas responded to the poll by sayingcustomer satisfaction ratings are the highest they have ever been in the airline’shistory and that QF continues to rank among the best in terms of one key industry benchmark – the Skytrax World Airline Awards.
Battle of the Baggage
When choosing your domestic airfare it now pays to look at your baggage before making your airline choice. Air New Zealand, from 15SEP, is changing its domestic baggage allowance to allow free carriage of the first checked bag up to 25kg, with a second bag of up to 25kg charged at just $15 and a third bag at $50. This compares with it's current limit of 20kg free allowance regardless of the number of bags, and $5 per kg thereafter. Under the new rules Air New Zealand passengers with two or three small bags could pack them together in a large "flea market bag" supplied free at check-in, as long as the combined weight did not exceed 25kg. Frequent flyers - travellers who are Gold, Gold Elite or Koru Club members - will get two free bags under the new regime. Passengers will also be able to take baby or medical equipment such as a pram, car seat or wheelchair for free. This development comes hot on the heels of Pacific Blue's announcement of its decision to charge $8 for all checked baggage up to a combined 23kg, with excess charged at $8 per kg. Qantas domestic NZ flights allow one bag of up to 20kg free and excess baggage at $5 per kg.

End to Departure Fee
Travellers leaving New Zealand from Auckland Airport on or after 01JUL08 will no longer need to pay a NZ$25 international departure fee. This is as a result of the long awaited transition to a new departure fee collection process. The departure fee is being replaced by a Passenger Services Charge (PSC). It will be levied by Auckland Airport on airlines, rather than travellers, based on the number of international arrivals and departures
Improved Entertainment
Air New Zealand has this week announced the refurbishment of all A320 and Boeing 767 aircraft, which will provide travellers with an enhanced travel experience before they fly and onboard the plane.
The refurbishment of the A320 and 767 aircraft will commence in August, with all aircraft completed by December 2008, and will provide each passenger with individual on-demand touch-screen entertainment in the back of seats giving them control of what you watch when you want, enabling you to start, stop, pause, fast forward and rewind more than 450 hours of movie, television and audio content. An exciting feature of the new on-demand seat-back entertainment is that it will be available for the entire flight, increasing customers viewing time. This means you can tune in from the moment you sit down, right up until the moment you land.
Adding to the experience, the 767 and A320 aircraft will also have an area known as Seat PLUS, where the seat pitch will be increasing from the current 30-31 inches to 35 or more inches in the first six economy rows (36 seats) of the A320 aircraft and the first seven economy rows (50 seats) of the 767 aircraft. This may seem like a small change, but it'll make a big difference in comfort. These seats will be available at no extra charge to Air NZ's frequent travellers.
U.S. Now Wants Three Days Notice
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has announced that it will require the citizens of 27 "Visa Waiver Program" countries, including New Zealand, to register online at least three days before boarding their aircraft or ship bound for the United States. The requirement comes into effect 12JAN09. The new program, known as Electronic System for Travel Authorization, or ESTA, will see visitors completing an internet-based form identical to the I-94 card presently filled in prior to their plane landing in the U.S. They will be able to make their entry application via a secure website from 01AUG08, and authorisations will be valid for up to two years or until the applicant's passport expires, whichever comes first. Initially, there will be no fee to apply for travel authorisation, although one may be imposed later
Strip-Search Expanded
The U.S. Transportation Security Administration's "whole body imaging" machines, which effectively see through clothing and provide a detailed on-screen image of a person's body, are to be deployed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and Los Angeles International Airport this week. They will be used randomly and those refusing to be scanned will be given a physical pat-down. It is the first expansion of the hightech screening system since test-use began in Phoenix, Arizona.
There, some 90% of pax preferred its use over to being frisked. To protect the traveller's privacy, the screener who reviews the image is in a booth, unable to see the traveller, according to the TSA. The traveller's face is pixilated and the image is not stored, the TSA told CNN.

Global Warming?
Low cost carrier easyJet was quick to respond to the IPPC call for "health warnings" on air travel by pointing out that air travel is responsible for less than two per cent of global CO2 emissions, while power generation accounts for over 30 per cent. It accuses those lobbying against airlines of using air travel as their red herring and an easy target which, even if everyone stopped flying, would make no real impact on the problem.
